PBAPP’S INNOVATIVE WATER TREATMENT PLANT RESIDUE RE-CYCLING PROJECT WINS 2 AWARDS

A PBAPP project to re-cycle water treatment plant residue won the Penang State Innovation Award 2016 (Non-ICT Category) on 28/11/2017. This “green” project involves the conversion of the residue at the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (Sungai Dua WTP) into a value-added material that may be used in clay brick production.

PBAPP also won the “Innovation Award Runner-Up” trophy for this project at the “International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2017” event in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) on 13/10/2017.

PBAPP launched an innovation project called “Conversion of Sungai Dua WTP residue into Clay Bricks” in 2009. Following various project innovation processes and tests, PBAPP has successfully produced “safe” clay bricks using water treatment plant residue. The clay bricks that PBAPP made (using Sungai Dua WTPR as a plasticizer) are non-toxic, inert and “safe” in terms of corrosivity, ignitability and reactivity. Moreover, the strength of the bricks, as building materials, complies with the Malaysian standard (MS 76:1976) and the European standard (BS EN771-1:2003) for clay bricks.
